Since the mid-1990s, Portland has had a small but vibrant hip-hop scene. Over the years, though, it's suffered from fragmentation and what some say is a lack of institutional support compared to other big cities.
That may be changing, according to artists who say the local movement is undergoing a renaissance. Hip-hop veterans such as Cool Nutz, who co-founded the Portland Oregon Hip-Hop Festival (POH-Hop), and rapper Mic Crenshaw are among those working to unite the different subgenres, like gangsta and underground. In recent months, Cool Nutz has launched a hip-hop radio show and a concert series. He considers himself "an ambassador and diplomat" for Northwest urban music.
One young artist attracting attention is Luck-One Conscious, a 24-year MC who just released Beautiful Music, his first album. Luck-One is part of Portland's so-called consciousness hip-hop movement. A devout Muslim, Luck-One says Islam is at the "centerpiece" of everything he does.
Cool Nutz and Luck-One will be coming into the studio to give us their takes on where the local hip-hop scene is headed. We'll also check in with Portland Mercury music critic Graham Barey and Adrienne Flagg, creative director of the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, which is staging a hip-hop cabaret this weekend aimed at highlighting hip-hop from rap to graffiti.
Are you a hip-hop artist, producer or afficionado living in Oregon or the Northwest? What's new and exciting about the local scene? What sets it apart? Where is it heading? What are the challenges unique to hip-hop in this area?
GUESTS:
- Cool Nutz: Co-founder of POH-Hop, hip hop artist and radio host with his own label, Jus Family Records
- Luck-One Conscious: MC/rapper who recently released his first album
- Graham Barey: music critic for the Portland Mercury
- Adrienne Flagg: Creative director for the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center
Portland Hip Hop Highschool?
Story Updated: Dec 15, 2009 at 11:06 PM PST
The school board vote was 6-0 Monday night. While several board members said they had concerns about the school's academic curriculum, they also said they appreciated the school's potential to draw students who aren't being served in the current system.
The new school's director, Erica Jayasuriya, says its mission is to prepare students to be successful in society while engaging them through the recording arts that include hip-hop music, dance, spoken word and art.
The new school aims to serve about 200 students.

Cool Nutz Godfather of Portland Hip Hop
Growing up in Northeast Portland, OR, Terrance Scott better known as Cool Nutz always kept his eyes on the prize. Hip-Hop culture had always played a huge role in his life, but at no point did he think that Hip-Hop culture and business would mix to put food on the table. Using Run DMC’s “Rock Box” as his initial inspiration, Cool Nutz teamed up with childhood friend Bosco Kante to start their pursuit of the dream.
From the early days basement studio, to tours of Europe, Cool Nutz has represented Portland Hip-Hop not only on a local level, but has carried the city on his back on a global level.
From the vocal booth to the boardroom, Cool Nutz and Bosko went from aspiring artist and producer to the heads of independent powerhouse record label Jus Family Records. Using Jus Family Records as the outlet to release albums from Cool Nutz, it was also the vehicle to release titles from G-Ism, Maniac Lok, Izaya, Luni Coleone & Cool Nutz, D.B.A., and Kenny Mack.
With 7 critically acclaimed solo albums under his belt: Dis Niggaz Nutz(1993), Harsh Game For The People(1995), Speakin Upon A Million(1997), Verbal Porn(1999), Collabos(2001), King Cool Nutz(2007), and The Miracle(2008), Cool Nutz has stood up to the test of time, and is the blueprint of longevity and relevance from a truly independent perspective.
From features in national publications The Source, Scratch, XLR8R, Spin, Murderdog, and more, to cover stories in regional publications Willamette Week, The Portland Mercury, The Oregonian A&E, Eugene Weekly and more, Cool Nutz has proven that his musical creations and career moves are more then press worthy.
With over 500 shows under his belt, Cool Nutz has graced the stage with the likes of Wu-Tang Clan, The Game, Ice Cube, Ludacris, Tech N9ne, E-40, Too Short, Mac Dre, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Trick Daddy, Run DMC, The Clipse, The Cool Kids, Common, The Dogg Pound, Sir Mix A Lot, Redman, The Grouch, 2 Live Crew, Andre Nickatina, Baby Bash, and more.
Cool Nutz has seen the highs and lows of this ever-changing music business. From the excitement of signing recording deals with Big Beat/Atlantic Records and Universal Records, to the disappointment of seeing those deals take a left turn for the worst. But with the mindset of a champion, Cool Nutz would only persevere to have his biggest recorded successes on Jus Family Records.
Understanding that diversity is the key to success in any business environment, Cool Nutz has applied his skills and business acumen to open many doors for not only himself, but the City of Portland as well. From Clearchannel Radio’s Northwest Breakout Radio Show, The Portland Oregon Hip-Hop Festival, and Executive Branch Management, Cool Nutz has used his professional moniker to create revenue, opportunity, and a very fruitful business career.
Standing as a testament of quality, creativity, integrity, selflessness, and professionalism, Cool Nutz’s career is still in full swing. With his recent signing to Suburban Noize Records, he will release his most polished work to date on the “Young Obama” album and Cool Nutz “Incredible”, which was produced entirely by upcoming beatsmith Terminill, which are scheduled for an early 2010 release.

Portland Hip Hop
Portland has always been an underdog city when it comes to the Hip Hop game. With Seattle and Vancouver developing a bigger hip hop scene faster than the Portland hip hop scene the city has always been underrated. Once the playing field leveled out Portland Hip Hop began pumping out fresh artist after fresh artist. Portland has been blessed with some major crews like Jus Family, The Sandpeople and members of the famous Northwest Hip Hop super-group Oldominion, most notably Sleep of The Chicharones. Artists Cool Nutz, Illmaculate, Maniac Lok, Sleep and Bosko are among the most famous artists to come up out of Portland. Other high quality emcees include Luck One, Diezel P, Dru Manchu, Rocket One, Kable Roc, just to name a few, have made names for themselves in the Portland Hip Hop scene. Illmaculate is a two time World Battle Rap Champion (2006, 2007)as well as a Scribble Jam freestyle rap winner (2004) and Spin the Mic competition winner.
More about Portland Hip Hop to come.
